BEFORE YOU READ

Before you read this post read the previous one. Then tell me what you think of this comment. I found it to be offensive.

I use the N word in class when talking about stereotypes. However, you must admit that by putting the word in popular songs, people of all ethnicities are becoming comfortable with using the term. I am not sure that ball can be stopped. The meaning and usage has been changed.

As I said in my thread, where you posted that you hate me...you are misunderstanding what I said. If you want a clarification, I'll be glad to explain it. I am a professor at a university, I am sure I can explain it easily. If you are just interestedin misunderstanding it and hating me...you are free to, you have my blessing :)

Since you posted on my site but not on yours, I'll copy and paste my response to you from my site.

Well, I guess different people can interpret messages differently. My observation to you was in reference to the fact that the n word began to be used by african americans for two main reason, according to linguistic and social studies research, and that were to take away the power it gave to those who used it negatively and for shock. Also, what I said, is that since that word has been making routine appearances in movies and music, particularly within the hip-hop culture, people of all ethnicities have become highly desensitized to it and feel like using it is ok because of its ubiquity. At no point did I say it was ok or not for anyone to use it. I bring up that issue in my classes, which have as many African American as Caucasian students at times. And I am a minority (Hispanic) myself. Your reaction was rather strong when you could have just asked what I meant. But that's OK, you are young and this is how we all learn :) so thank for the opportunity to explain.

...so young means that people freak about things...? i think that

"If you are just interestedin misunderstanding it and hating me...you are free to, you have my blessing :)"

is considered overreacting. course, i'm young, so i might just be spazzing over something...

ryn: addy is a web address. had to change it cuz someone i didn't want to read it had found it again.

i cut because...well, my dad called me names, yelled, said that i said things i didn't, taunted me, stuff like that. and there was some other stuff from my past, but...anyway.

scars?? i have no earthly idea. i didn't use to cut deep enough to leave scars. and right now nothing has completely healed yet. i've only cut for a year about. before that it was other stuff.

...you sound like you're over 40. teenagers do have points about life. we can understand things, and yes, *gasp* sometimes we understand things that adults don't. i know, shocking. you say you remember. right. i don't believe that for a minute. if you did, you wouldn't have stated your opinion (i say opinion because that's all it is. it's certainly not fact) in quite the way you did. and maybe people should be worried. because we are the future. and everything in our lives shapes who we will ultimately become.
